The United States continues to apply pressure with the big stick of tariffs

On the 12th, local time, US President Trump posted on social media stating that any country engaging in commercial transactions with Iran would face a 25% tariff increase when conducting any business dealings with the US. That same day, the US State Department issued a “security alert” urging US citizens to depart from Iran immediately. On the 13th, Trump discussed with senior government officials the next steps to be taken against Iran. Some analysts believe that the series of actions taken by the US is aimed at further pressuring Iran.

In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated on the 12th, following a large-scale rally held by the public in support of the government that day, that this was a demonstration of the Iranian people’s strength and determination to their enemies, and also a warning to the US. Regarding the situation in Iran, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated at a regular press conference on the 13th that China hopes and supports Iran in maintaining national stability.

We have always opposed interference in other countries’ internal affairs and the use or threat of force in international relations, and hope that all parties will do more to contribute to peace and stability in the Middle East. She emphasized, “We are closely monitoring the development of the situation in Iran and will take all necessary measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens.”
